Check out 'Follow the Leader', a podcast about the career journeys of ECU alumni. This special series has been created for you by talented teams of ECU students.
In this podcast, you’ll follow the career journeys of leading ECU Alumni from a range of professions.
You’ll get an insight into their chosen profession, as well as tips, from how to get your big break, to how to succeed in your career, and more.
Since being launched earlier this year the series has featured a wide range of different people each with a unique and fascinating career.
Jermaine D'Vauz completed a Bachelor of Communications and Graduate Diploma of Broadcasting at ECU and has gone on to establish a career in radio, both in front of and behind the mic. In his episode he shared what it's like to be part of the team that creates one of the biggest radio shows in Australia, 'The Kyle and Jackie O Show'.
Jermaine shares that when he began his studies in media culture and mass communication, he wasn't entirely sure of what career path he wanted to take.
"I really didn't have an idea of exactly what I wanted to do." Jermaine said. "I have such an interest in so many different things. When it comes to television, radio film.
"I have a twin brother, so he and I used to dance a lot. So we were just doing some dancing, like we just loved media and entertainment."
After getting some hands on experience at community radio station RTRFM 92.1, Jermaine decided broadcasting would be the area he would focus on. He notes the practical structure of the course at ECU set him up for an easy transition into the radio industry.
He began working behind the scenes at Nova in Perth, and after some time was put in charge of the digital and video content for the long running 'Nat, Nathan and Shaun Breakfast Show', and slowly began picking up on-air announcer shifts on weekends and public holidays.
In the podcast chat Jermaine goes on to share what it was like working on the chaotic 'The Kyle and Jackie O Show', and how he remains energetic for some very early morning starts.
In another recent episode Anna Froederberg shares her experience of being an international student, and finding the hidden job market.
Hailing from Sweden, Anna came to ECU to study commerce and management. During her course she also did some units in marketing which gave her broad range of skills.
Anna shares that as an international student she was quite nervous at the beginning of her learning journey.
'I was quite nervous about the academic side of things. So I started quite nervous my first semester, and kind of just made it through." she shares. "it was definitely a steep learning curve that first semester."
Once she was settled though, she excelled in her endeavors and soon made the Dean's List - being recognised as one of the school's top achievers.
While most people think of looking for jobs via advertisements, the reality is most positions are never advertised and are filled by networking and word of mouth. In her chat Anna shares how sitting next to someone at a breakfast lead to her first big job in her career.
