Academic Skills Centre

The Academic Skills Centre (ASC) can help you effectively transition into university study and equip you with the necessary skills to become a successful student and lifelong learner

Who are we?

The ASC is staffed by a group of highly qualified, skilled, experienced and friendly Learning Advisers who can help with your studies. Contact a Learning Adviser.

What do we do?

As staff of the Academic Skills Centre, we can:

  • assist you with tackling assessment tasks (at Assignment Drop in Sessions);
  • help you to develop your English language (through English Language Workshops);
  • deliver academic skills training workshops in the areas of academic literacy, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (through Academic Skills Workshops); and
  • collaborate with your lecturer to make tacit assignment instructions accessible to you (within your lectures/tutorials and/or on your unit Blackboard sites).

To find out more about how we can help you, click on the Academic Skills Centre Blackboard site

HDR Skills Centre

Who are we?

The HDR (Higher Degree Research) Skills Centre (JO34.306) is staffed by highly qualified and experienced HDR Communication Advisers who provide a range of advice to research students (PhD, PhD–Integrated, Master by Research and Honours Research) in workshops and individual consultations. Contact a HDR Communication Adviser.

What do we do?

HDR Communication Advisers support research students with writing proposals, thesis chapters, abstracts and draft journal manuscripts. We also help with responding to reviewers’ and examiners’ comments, conference submissions and presentations. In the future, we will assist with oral examination skills development. We also work with supervisors to develop HDR communications skills through discipline-based workshops or in designated School HDR programs, Welcomes and Inductions. Our workshops are advertised through the Graduate Research School, the Centre for Learning and Teaching and/or your school HDR coordinator.

To find self-access online resources for HDR students developed by HDR Communication Advisers go to the Research Skills Centre Blackboard site.

To find personal reflections on the process of writing by senior ECU academics go to ECU Researchers on Writing.
