Thank you Mount Lawley - for the memories, the milestones and the magic

As ECU prepares to open the doors to its bold new City Campus in 2026, we pause to reflect on the enduring legacy of our Mount Lawley Campus, a place of learning, creativity and community for over 50 years.

Established in 1970, Mount Lawley Campus has redefined teacher education, shaping generations of future teachers and fostering inclusive learning through Aboriginal education programs. In 1993 Kurongkurl Katitjin was officially named, with the Noongar meaning 'coming together to learn'.

For the past 40 years it has also been home to WAAPA. Providing the most comprehensive range of performing arts training in Australia, WAAPA has become known for the calibre of its graduates, including Hollywood stars like Hugh Jackman.

The School of Arts and Humanities has flourished at Mount Lawley too, growing into one of Australia's largest and most diverse arts and social science communities championing creativity, critical thinking, and positive social change.

Mount Lawley has shaped generations of educators, performers and changemakers. As the School of Education moves north to Joondalup, and WAAPA and Arts & Humanities transition to the city, we carry forward its spirit in every classroom, every stage, and every success.

Remembering Mount Lawley Campus: A Brief History

What is the plan for the campus grounds?

Teaching at the campus ends at the conclusion of Semester 2, 2025. Some course and unit offerings across the university will be delivered from new locations.

The Mount Lawley campus will be vacated and handed back to the WA State Government by the end of 2027. DevelopmentWA is leading the redevelopment project has captured feedback and ideas to shape the redevelopment Master Plan, including from our staff and students.
