HELP loans

HECS-HELP

HECS-HELP is a loan for tuition fees from the Australian Government, which pays for your university tuition fees. There is no interest applied however, the loan is indexed with inflation annually.

This loan is only available for Commonwealth Supported courses and covers the student contribution amount you are liable to pay. You may choose for the HECS-HELP loan to cover all or part of your student contribution amount.

To be eligible to defer your fees via HECS-HELP you must also be:

  • an Australian Citizen; or
  • hold a Permanent Humanitarian Visa; or
  • a qualifying New Zealand Special Category Visa holder.

SA-HELP

SA-HELP is a deferred loan scheme for eligible students for the Student Services and Amenities Fee. Similar to HECS-HELP, there is no interest applied however, the loan is indexed with inflation annually.

To receive a SA-HELP loan to defer payment of the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), you need to:

  • be an Australian Citizen or hold a Permanent Humanitarian Visa;
  • be residing in Australia for at least one unit of your course; and
  • provide your tax file number in the Request for SA-HELP form prior to the due date.

Please note that Cross-Institutional students can obtain SA-HELP from their home institution only. Non-Award and WAAPA VET students are not eligible for a SA-HELP loan.

FEE-HELP

FEE-HELP is a loan that the Australian Government provides to cover tuition fees for many full fee courses. There is no interest applied however, the loan is indexed with inflation annually.

You can choose to defer your fees using FEE-HELP on our Student Information Management Online (SIMO) system. If you obtain a FEE-HELP debt, this amount is added to any existing HECS-HELP debt you may have, to form a single HELP debt.

You may be eligible for this loan if you are:

  • an Australian Citizen; or
  • hold a Permanent Humanitarian Visa; or
  • a qualifying New Zealand Special Category Visa Holder; or
  • a Permanent Resident of Australia completing bridging studies for overseas-trained professionals (dependent on eligibility).

University Certificate and University Diploma awards and Non-Award enrolments are not eligible for FEE-HELP.

OS-HELP

OS-HELP is a loan scheme to assist eligible undergraduate students to undertake some of their Australian course of study overseas.

To be eligible for an OS-HELP Loan, you must satisfy the following Government criteria:

  • you are an Australian citizen, permanent humanitarian visa holder or a New Zealand Special Category Visa holder who meets the long-term residency requirements
  • you are enrolled as a Commonwealth supported student and have completed one full-time student load (usually one year of full-time study);
  • you have not received an OS-HELP Loan on more than one other occasion;
  • you will have at least 15 credit points to complete at ECU after your overseas study;
  • you have had your course credit approval sighted, or enrolment approved at the overseas institution.

If you meet the above criteria, you can apply for OS-HELP by completing and submitting an OS-HELP Loan Application form.

OS-HELP is not available to students undertaking their whole course outside Australia.
