Overseas Travel - Email and OneDrive Restrictions

The IT Services Centre wished to remind staff with overseas travel plans to check Multifactor Authentication (MFA) is implemented and working on your devices, prior to leaving Australia. MFA is now mandatory for all ECU staff, to mitigate the risk of credential theft through phishing activity and other methods.

In order to access your ECU email services whilst overseas, you will be required to authenticate using a code sent to you by the MFA application.

What do you need to do before you travel?

  • Install and configure the Microsoft Authenticator application on your mobile phone and tablet prior to leaving Australia.
  • Configure your mobile phone number as a primary authentication phone number and your landline number as an alternate authentication phone number.
  • Configure the Authenticator application which will then become primary method of authentication while you travel.
  • Remember to take your mobile phone and tablet with you; these devices are the key to unlocking your ECU accounts when overseas.

Please note you will need to be connected to a wireless network at your destination for MFA to work.

If you lose or forget your authentication device or it is lost or stolen, you will be required to contact the IT Service Desk and we will work with you to find an alternative authentication method. Due to the increased risk of credential theft, disabling MFA is not possible

If you have any questions or need assistance to ensure your MFA is configured correctly before you leave the country, please contact the IT Service Desk on or +61 8 6304 6000.
