Staff Surveys

‘Empowering the talent and potential of our staff’ is outlined as a goal in the ECU Strategic Plan, 2022 – 2026 - Towards the University of the Future. Surveys are used to gain feedback to ensure all staff can thrive in their careers at ECU.

Staff are asked to engage in various surveys throughout their time at ECU to provide insights on the critical issues being experienced by staff and identify focus areas for various employee programs and plans.

New Starter and Exit Surveys

Staff are encouraged to complete New Starter and Exit surveys to assist us in identifying opportunities to improve ECU's employee experience.

Payroll will send an electronic link to your ECU email to complete these surveys.

  • New Starter – let us know how you are settling into your new workplace and team.
  • Exit Survey – reflect on your time working here; you also have the option of a face-to-face interview with a HR Business Partner.

Staff Engagement Surveys

These surveys give staff the opportunity to express their views about what it’s like to work at the University and comment on what changes would improve their employee experience.

ECU works with VOICE Project to deliver surveys every two years. The most recent survey was conducted over three weeks in September 2022.

All ongoing and fixed term employees were invited to complete the survey.

Overall, the ECU Staff Engagement survey provides:

  • a better understanding of how working at ECU differs across various diversity groups (e.g. gender, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, people with a disability, LGBTIQA+) to identify opportunities to improve belonging and inclusion and build a workforce that is representative of the broader community.
  • school and centre leadership/management teams insights about staff views on leadership, teamwork, communication, co-operation, change readiness and other issues affecting job satisfaction and engagement to inform focus areas for individual school/centre people and culture plans.
  • the ability to track progress with existing ECU-wide and school/centre-based initiatives and people and culture plans.

What happens with results

Schools and Centres use these results as one cultural indicator to inform the development of people and culture plans. These plans support schools and centres to successfully champion a culture of resilience, courage, innovation and excellence.

ECU uses the results to inform strategic planning, benchmarking and to make continuous university wide improvements addressed within annual policy and process reviews. For example, the 2022 survey results have informed the Academic Career Pathway project and Athena Swan activity.

Benchmarking

ECU results are compared to 40 Australian and New Zealand Universities who also use VOICE Project to conduct their staff engagement surveys. Additionally, results are compared with an All-Industry database of 1600 organisations drawn from the Not-for-profit, Public (local, state, and federal) and Private sectors.

Staff Check-in Survey COVID-19

To understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on individual staff members, staff were surveyed in May 2020. The results were used to better support employee experience in the initial 12 months of the pandemic. People and Culture worked with Executive Deans and Directors to unpack the results for their areas and develop appropriate responses.
