Inquiry-based Learning

What is it?

Inquiry-based learning involves giving learners the opportunity to identify and investigate real world problems, and propose solutions. It is a model of learning that encourages students to take responsibility for their learning.

Inquiry-based learning encompasses a number of other types of learning, such as problem-based learning, collaborative learning and case-based learning, and allows for the refinement of skills such as problem-solving, researching, organising, critical thinking, and interpersonal interaction.

Critiquing the end result, and reflection during all stages of the process, are integral parts of inquiry-based learning.

This type of learning works well in any discipline where knowledge can be greatly expanded through exploration and discovery, and where the development of an inquiring mind is important within the field.
