Major Course Reviews

As part of the University’s approach to quality assurance and continuous improvement, ECU requires that all courses (coursework and HDR) are comprehensively reviewed every five years to ensure the ongoing academic quality, relevance and viability of each course, and satisfy the University’s obligations as a Self-Accrediting Authority under the HESF.

A Major Course Review (MCR) involves reviewing the past and present effectiveness of a course. Its purpose is to enable the University to determine any improvements that a course requires, and whether the course should be re-accredited and continue to be delivered.

Major Course Reviews provide the scope for schools (and other ECU academic units) to:

  • improve course design and implementation;
  • examine intended outcomes and actual outcomes (evaluate impact);
  • promote dialogue and improve co-operation between participants/stakeholders;
  • draw on multiple perspectives to maintain currency and viability of the course and its curriculum; and
  • be future-oriented, designing actions aligned in light of key strategic initiatives.

A Major Course Review will consider and report on the structure, content, quality and performance of the course in relation to the policies of the University, and in comparison to similar courses offered at other institutions. Re-accreditation of the course will be determined by Academic Board at the end of the review, satisfying ECU’s obligations under the HESF as a registered Self-Accrediting Authority.

A basic overview of the process for the Major Course Review and Re-accreditation is as follows:

  • Review Initiation
  • Planning Meeting
  • In Review (Data analysis, Self-assessment Team and key stakeholder meetings and report drafting)
  • School Approval
  • Education Committee
  • Academic Board (Re-accreditation Due)
  • Action Plan Implementation
