The University's five strategic priorities are designed to be flexible, adaptable and responsive to internal and external opportunities and challenges; and provide a clear, long-term framework for strategic thinking and decision-making. University plans contain measures and targets in order to monitor and report progress towards achieving the objectives. Measures may include relevant Performance Indicators (PIs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Functional Plans
The strategic priorities, informed by annual goals and the budget, inform the basis for rolling three-year functional plans. Functional plans sit between the strategic level and operational level in the planning framework. They are intended to translate particular functions (such as teaching and learning, research and engagement) into strategies that can be adopted across more than one operational area of the University.

Operational Plans
Operational plans guide the annual operations within each faculty, service centre and office and are endorsed by the relevant executive line manager. In developing an operational plan, guidance should be taken from Engaging Minds; Engaging Communities:Towards 2020 and its four strategic priorities, and incorporate the actions contained in relevant functional plans.

School/Unit/Team Work Plans
Many Schools, Units and Teams across the University, develop detailed work plans that translate the activities of their Faculty/Centre Operational Plan, into meaningful tasks to be undertaken by individuals.
Individual Work Plans
Individual work plans identify individual objectives and tasks aligning with the operational plan of the relevant faculty or centre and school/ unit/ team work plans where appropriate. The individual plans developed by staff members and their line managers and the process is overseen by the Human Resources Services Centre, which provides guidance and reference documents for staff and managers preparing individual work plans.
For training and support in the development of functional or operational plans, faculties and service centres may contact the Planning and Equity Team.
