Professional accreditation is a process whereby a course undergoes a rigorous, authoritative and independent review of its quality and relevance according to the standards determined by an appropriate professional or industry accreditation body or other agency.

Professional accreditation activities are undertaken in accordance with Professional Accreditation Procedures. These Procedures must be followed to ensure appropriate planning, resourcing, communication, transparency and oversight of the process.

Typically in the professions, accreditation of courses precedes professional registration of successful graduates, in that accreditation is an endorsement that a program produces graduates who can meet registration standards and may begin professional practice.

In some cases, the word “accreditation” may not be used by the professional or industry body or agency. “Approval” is the most common alternative nomenclature.
