Planning ahead

As part of your MPS annual performance planning, your discussion with your line manager will cover:

  • setting realistic work objectives that focus on outcomes NOT activities;
  • aligning your objectives to operational plans for your school or service centre;
  • identifying short-term development opportunities to assist you in achieving your objectives; and
  • discussing longer term career paths, as appropriate.

Planning templates - introducing online Review and Development Plans (RDP)

To help you set your goals for the year ahead, you can now develop an online Review and Development Plan (RDP) by simply logging into Staff Kiosk. This online system is based on the My Work Plan templates and better supports ongoing two-way feedback with your line manager throughout the year by using online progress reviews. It also ensures you are always referring to the most up-to-date RDP, regardless of what role you’re taking in the MPS process.

Key Features:

  • ‘My Work Plan’ becomes ‘Review and Development Plan’ or simply ‘RDP’.
  • Objectives and development plans easily updated/amended.
  • Access to plans and reviews entered online through Staff Kiosk– no more lost paper work.
  • Prepopulate objectives based on past plans entered online.
  • Capture evidence of achievements in reviews with document upload functionality.
  • Ability to comment on how you demonstrate ECU values in RDP reviews.
  • Extract agreed plans and reviews into PDF documents.
  • Email notification when line manager approves your RDP plan or review.

For Managers/Supervisors

  • All team members’ plans and reviews readily accessed through Staff Kiosk.
  • Team overview indicating at which stage of the MPS process each team member is at.
  • Email notification when team member submits their plan or a review.

Role Based Development Framework

The RBDF, with its underlying matrices such as the Course Matrix, People Capability Matrix and Behaviour Contribution matrix, enables you to plan your professional development for next year and more. This is important for staff wishing to apply for the Professional Development Fund, as career development during the Review and Development Plan discussions forms part of the application criteria.

This framework is used in conjunction with the Management for Performance System (MPS) and the associated MPS Online tool. The RBDF, MPS Online tool, and Professional Development Fund have been created to provide all staff with training and development opportunities that are best targeted to general and specific roles in a planned manner.

ECU Researcher Professional Development Framework (RPDF) and Planner

ECU’s RPDF is designed to provide a holistic view of researcher development needs across an academic career, including Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students, early to mid-career and experienced researchers. The framework is organised in to four domains which represent the important competencies for a research academic. These domains include:

  • Personal and Professional Development;
  • Research Skills;
  • Research Governance; and
  • Engagement and Impact.

The RPDF defines these four domains and the core competencies that exist within each section. The RPDF and Planner helps to plan your goals, according to your career stage and provides expert advice, workshops, online courses, resources and key contacts for essential activities.

The Framework is supported by a simplified one-page planner which helps researchers to identify strengths, prioritise areas for development and can assist with planning and tracking actions. The Framework and Planner can inform effective career development and mentoring conversations.
