Vanities and redirects

A vanity URL is a URL or domain name, created to point to something to which it is related and indicated in the name of the URL. In theory, vanity URLs are creatively linked to something making them easier to remember than a more random link. (Wikipedia)

Vanities

Vanities can be requested on any webpages maintained by the WebCMS. These include the following domains:

  • www.ecu.edu.au
  • international.ecu.edu.au (marketing use)
  • waapa.ecu.edu.au

Vanities should have short and descriptive names that indicate their intended destination. Generally speaking, they must conform to the following conventions:

  • they should be lowercase;
  • they should be short;

Vanities created for schools must match the following convention:

  • www.ecu.edu.au/xxxx
  • www.ecu.edu.au/snm/xxxx
  • www.ecu.edu.au/sah/xxxx

Vanities created for research centres and areas must match the following convention:

  • www.ecu.edu.au/research/xxxx
  • www.ecu.edu.au/research/cppp
  • www.ecu.edu.au/research/defence

Vanities created for web applications must match the following convention:

  • www.ecu.edu.au/apps/xxxx
  • www.ecu.edu.au/apps/simo
  • www.ecu.edu.au/apps/callista

Submitting a vanity request

  • Applications for the creation of a vanity URL must be submitted to the Digital Marketing, Experience and Analytics Team, via email corporateweb@ecu.edu.au using the 'Vanities Request Template'.
  • Please allow up to 5 business for the creation of vanity URLs.
