The Australian Awards for University Teaching are designed to recognise quality teaching practice and outstanding contributions to student learning. Award recipients are acknowledged as leaders in learning and teaching in their field, able to contribute to systemic change in learning and teaching through ongoing knowledge sharing and dissemination.

Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) Fellow Professor Mark Israel will lead a workshop for aspiring national teaching awards and citations applicants which is open to all WA universities. Mark has published in the areas of higher education and research policy and practice, criminology and socio-legal studies. Winner of the Prime Minister’s Award for University Teacher of the Year in 2004, and the inaugural American Society of Criminology Teaching Award in 2010, Mark is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the United Kingdom and was both a Teaching Fellow (2009) and a Discipline Scholar (2010) of the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC). He is part of a national team funded by the OLT to develop professional skills among sessional staff in Law. He was a member of the OLT Awards Standing Committee for three years and has experience supporting teaching practice in a range of public and private higher education institutions and government organisations in Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

How do you prepare to apply for a national teaching award or citation?

This workshop/presentation will address this by guiding you and your peers through:

  • What are the OLT teaching awards and citations?
  • Why might I apply?
  • What do I need to demonstrate?
  • How do I identify my key focus?
  • What can’t I demonstrate, yet?
  • How might I fill these gaps before I apply?
  • How do I write an award-winning narrative?

This workshop will provide an opportunity for you to reflect on, and plan for, your OLT award or citation application, with expert guidance in a supportive environment. Don’t miss this opportunity!
