This workshop is an opportunity to hear from Associate Professor Helen Farley on her OLT funded project that is developing tools to enable prisoner students to fully participate in their university studies.

The workshop is hosted by the Centre for Learning and Development and will be chaired by Dr Margaret Giles from the School of Business. This workshop will provide insights into the challenges faced by unit coordinators, lecturers and tutors who are trying to give their prisoner students a university learning experience that is comparable to their other online students.

Presenters

Associate Professor Helen Farley is from the Australian Digital Futures Institute at the University of Southern Queensland. She is the project lead of the OLT-funded ‘From Access to Success’ project which will develop an internet-independent version of Moodle that will enable electronic access to course materials and activities for those students without internet access. This project has been so successful that Helen and ADFI were recently awarded $4.4 million through the Australian Government’s Higher Education Participation and Pathways Program to take the Moodle and notebook computers to Indigenous and non-Indigenous incarcerated students across Australia.

Mr Ray Chavez is President of the Australasian Correctional Education Education (ACEA) and Research Manager of the Vocational Training Unit Western Australian Department of Corrective Services.

Dr Margaret Giles is a Senior Lecturer with the School of Business. Her research uses linked datasets to examine the role of correctional education in improving post-release outcomes such as reducing re-offending and welfare dependence.
