Australian Awards for University Teaching
The Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) scheme and the sub categories have been used to design the Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching and Learning scheme so that local award winners in each category are well placed to commit themselves for AAUT nomination by ECU. This AAUT scheme has three major categories with total funding of over $3 million.
The AAUT categories
Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (160 awards of $10,000)
These are intended for people who have been involved in some aspect of service to student learning that address one or two of the same criteria that applies to the Teaching Excellence Awards. Evidence of excellent and sustained performance is critical in AAUT Citation awards and student learning outcomes must be the main measure of performance. Both general staff and academic are eligible for this award.

AAUT Teaching Excellence Awards (16 awards of $25,000)
The AAUT Teaching Excellence Awards give recognition to teachers (individuals and teams) renowned for the excellence of their teaching, who have outstanding presentation skills and who have made a broad and deep contribution to enhancing the quality of learning and teaching in higher education. They cover sub categories of:
- Biological Sciences, Health and Related Studies;
- Early Career (less than seven years teaching experience);
- Humanities and the Arts;
- Law, Economics, Business and Related Studies;
- Neville Bonner Award/s for Indigenous Education;
- Physical Sciences and Related Studies;
- Social Sciences (including Education); and
- The Priority Area for 2012: Teaching a diverse student population.

AAUT Programs that Enhance Learning Awards (12 awards of $25,000)
The Program awards are designed to recognise learning and teaching support programs and services that make an outstanding contribution to the quality of student learning and the quality of the student experience. There are seven categories:
- Widening participation;
- Educational partnerships and collaborations with other organisations;
- The first-year experience;
- Flexible learning and teaching;
- Innovation in curricula, learning and teaching;
- Postgraduate education; and
- Services supporting student learning.
